Israel braces for fifth election in less than four years

The Brief No. 26

01 July 2022

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali  Bennett resigns triggering another political fiasco in Israel

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has resigned a year into his 4 years term. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid will become the acting Prime Minister of Israel till next elections in Nov 2022.

Bennet and Lapid have been in governing coalition since June 2021.

One of the terms of the coalition agreement was that Bennet was going to lead the first 2 years before ceding the rest of the term to Lapid.

None of of us believed it at the time.

Afrasid have argued that Netanyahu who is facing corruption charges somehow enabled Bennett’s win to sway attention from him.

After all, notwithstanding apparent disagreements, Bennett and Netanyahu share similar politics and dislike of the Leftists.

Therefore and they would do whatever to prevent Leftists from ascending to power in Israel.

They simply played “Medvedev and Putin on us” a colleague at the time retorted. Referring to how the President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev manipulated elections loopholes to maintain power.

Bennett announced that he won’t be standing for elections in Nov 2022, on the other hand Benjamin Netanyahu will be standing against Lapid.  This will his sixth time contesting for the top position in his career.

Netanyahu could win given security uncertainty in the past months inside Israel.
