The Brief, No 12
26 December 2021
Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu has passed away.
He was one of the last South African Nobel Peace Prize Laureates.
His death follows closely that of another South African Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Former President FW De Klerk.
Tutu coined the term the Rainbow Nation, a term used to describe multiculturalism and multiracialism in South Africa (SA).
He was the chairperson of probably the most important political process in SA, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)
Tutu was the first black African Archbishop of the Anglican Church in South Africa
Tutu will be remembered as a true non racialist, an anti-apartheid activist, who led the sanction campaign against apartheid South Africa.
He remained the main voice against oppression inside South Africa whilst many were exiled and in jail.
He promoted what became known as the “liberation theology”. Fusing Christianity with political struggle.
Importantly he predicted the downfall of the former president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma. He was amongst the first who broke ranks to condemning Zuma’s presidency.
